

Devin Castle (Devinsky Hrad)
The Basics
Set atop a hill on the Slovak-Austrian border, Devin Castle overlooks the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers. It’s a quick jaunt from the historic quarter of Bratislava and makes a great day trip. Tours generally include a ride down the Danube River to reach the castle, as well as a tasting of local currant wine. For a more personalized experience, opt for a private tour to explore the highlights of Bratislava and drive through the countryside to explore the castle.

Devin Castle is a must-visit for European history buffs.
There is little shade at the castle so come prepared with sunscreen and water.
Wear comfortable shoes to navigate the uneven surfaces of the castle ruins.
The ruins of the castle are not suitable for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility.
How to Get There
Devin Castle lies just 6 miles (9.5 kilometers) from Bratislava, an easy 10-minute taxi ride or drive from Old Town Bratislava. Free parking is available. Alternatively, take city bus 29 from Novy Most (New Bridge), which takes approximately 30 minutes. During the summer months, you can also take a 90-minute boat ride along the Danube from the city center to Devin Castle.

When to Get There
The castle is open 10am to 4:30pm Tuesday through Sunday, and until 5:30pm April through October. Since Devin Castle is in ruins and exposed to the elements, it is closed during inclement weather. The best time to visit Bratislava is between May and September, when it is warmer and less windy.
Spend a Day in Devin
Devin offers a wonderful respite from the city, if that’s what you need. Get to the castle early to soak up the atmosphere and avoid large crowds. Afterward, rent a canoe to explore the flora and fauna of the Danube, bike around the quaint village, or embark on a hike through the lush surroundings. To round out the day, you can also sample the Slovak cuisine and local wine at various establishments in the city.
