Miraflores Locks

Panama Canal, Eastern Shore, Panama

The Basics

There are several locks in the Panama City area, including the Miraflores, Pedro Miguel, Gatun, and Cocoli locks. Closest to the city, the Miraflores Locks are the only site set up for visitors. Explore the state-of-the-art 4-story Visitors Center, where fascinating exhibitions, video and 3D film presentations, and interactive displays chronicle the building of the Panama Canal, its history, how it operates, and the passage of ships through the locks. Tickets include access to the two viewing terraces with a prime view over the locks.

A stop at the Miraflores Visitors Center is a popular inclusion on Panama City tours, often in combination with a drive through the Panama Canal Zone, a photo stop at the Bridge of the Americas, or a walking tour of Old Town (Casco Viejo), a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Best Panama canal and Panama City tour program from Colon + Excellent tour guide
Excellent Must-to-do tour from Colon to Panama. One of the best tour guide, "Sandiago" I met so far. He is young, but very professional and with good patience! If anyone considers Panama canal lock and Panama city tour from Colon, I strongly recommend to use this tour program instead of direct booking from Cruise ship.

Panama City Tour and Visit Miraflores Locks
I really liked my excursion. Fairly priced for the things I experienced. I would have rated five stars if the cost of the Locks were included (cost was ONLY for a reservation NOT a ticket) and if my tour guide spoke a bit more English.

Reopened Panama Canal Miraflores Locks, City Tour and taste of Geisha Coffee.
Omg, I had an amazing time with my tour guide Benjamin. He is well knowledge on the history of the canal. My private tour included a visit to the Miraflores Locks, The Coastway, and Casco Viejo which was amazing for photography. At the canal, you must watch the IMAX movie about the history of the canal it’s worth the cost.

Santiago is simply wonderful. Very knowledgeable, charming and accommodating. This is one of the best tours and the first we had giving us not only water but also local beer on the bus. They also gave us the sweetest pineapples!!! The ride to the locks was long but Santiago made it fun

Content of the tour was great. Our English speaking guide wasn’t very fluent in English so we had difficulty communicating. However, he was pleasant and tried very hard to give us a good tour.

Cruiseline Excursion Colon: Panama City tour and Miraflores Locks
Our guide Elvis and driver Joseph were excellent. We were met just outside the Colon port and driven to Panama city with a stop off on the way to see an enormous container ship and a smaller one sailing down the canals. Elvis was very knowledgeable, very pleasant and we highly recommend you ask for him if you book this excursion.

Panama Canal is a must see

Cruiseline Excursion Colon: Panama City tour and Miraflores Locks
We walked to the casino for our 9AM meeting place, from our cruise ship as designated on our ticket. No one was there and we tried to text and call to inquire where our tour guide was. Several police officers were kind enough to help and to call the help line on our ticket. When we got through, the person who answered said he didn't speak English and hung up. The bus finally arrived close to 9:30 which was our departure time. Everyone else was on the bus! They all got picked up while walking to the casino. Needless to say, it was a bit stressful. Once we found our tour guide, Elvis, he proved to be very knowledgeable and gave us the history of the Panama Canal while on our bus drive. We were able to walk around the old city of Panama on our own to explore for about 45 minutes. The Panama Canal is a "must see." We were fortunate enough to see two ships going through the locks.

Mario our guide was very informative and amazing . He took extra time with me cause I don't walk fast anymore. It was an awesome tour. The Panama canal was amazing to watch the ships go through the locks. The city tour of the cathedrals were so beautiful. I would highly recommend this tour to other seniors. It is easily excessable to the events. I do not recommend for seniors in wheel chairs or walkers. The bus was comfortable. Stairs on the bus just a little tough but not to bad. The tour showed both old and new Panama. From poor to riches. Great tour.

Absolutely brilliant!! Elvis and Jacob were our tour guys and boy did they did a good job. Elvis’s knowledge as a tour guide was second to none. We visited the Miraflores locks and that was fantastic, would highly recommend, you will be seriously impressed. We then went on to do a tour of the colonial side of Panama - which is stunning and also visited the new side, the city centre and did some shopping. We certainly got more than value for money and would certainly highly recommend this tour and visit Panama again.

When to Get There

The locks are most exciting when the big ships arrive—typically between 9am–11:30am, and 3pm–5pm—and an early start is the best way to avoid the crowds.

Panama Canal

Built in 1914, the 51-mile-long (82 kilometer) waterway of the Panama Canal allows maritime traffic to pass along the narrow Isthmus of Panama, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans—saving ships an impressive 8,000 nautical miles (15,000 kilometers) of travel around South America. More than 14,000 ships pass through the canal each year, and many are purpose-built to fit through the narrow locks—just 110 feet (34 meters) wide.
